STRESSES RELATED TO NEW PARENTHOOD

  Much of the focus
of my training has been focused on understanding the psychological impact of the first years of life. Many parents experience feelings towards their babies that can be frightening or overwhelming. Parenthood can bring up unresolved issues from our own early beginning. With adequate understanding of these issues a sturdier, more confident parent can emerge.

Reasons for Parents to Seek Psychotherapy:

o Exploring feelings of ambivalence or fear
               during pregnancy
             o
Promotion of parent-child attachment
o Treatment of post partum depression or
                mood disturbance

o Self doubt or self critical thoughts about
ability to be a good parent

o Feelings of anger toward baby

o Relationship conflicts arising from transition
               from couple to family

o Resolving issues related to abortion
               or adoption

             o Coping with miscarriage

o Stresses related to body image
